On February 2, 2005, Yonhap reported the following incident:
Warrant for the arrest of a man in his 30s for breaking into home of foreign instructorsIt sounds like it was rather rough encounter. While it has little to do with the English Spectrum incident, it does go to show that some stories of foreign teachers being victimized at the hands of Koreans did make it into the news.
(Ulsan=Yonhap News) Reporter Jang Yeong-eun = Ulsan Seobu Police on the 2nd requested an arrest warrant for a Mr. Kim (33, jobless) who has been charged for theft and breaking into the home of English hagwon foreign instructors and for use of violence (assault) against foreign English instructors.
According to police, at 4am on the 1st, Mr. Kim broke into the housing provided by an Ulsan English hagwon to try to steal money and valuables and choked female foreign English teacher A, who had been woken up, and threw punches at and injured two other foreign instructors before fleeing.
Police collected bloodstains from the scene of the crime and arrested Mr. Kim after it was confirmed by a DNA test that it matched Mr. Kim's.
One question that pops up, though, is how long it takes to do a DNA test, since the suspect was arrested, according to the report, some 24 hours after the crime took place.
