The Pearl Buck novel on Korea was required reading in one of my Korean history classes, and investigating into Ms. Buck herself, she was not squeaky clean. More Bismarckian pragmatic as was must have been necessary in post-war east Asia.ZenKimchihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00081373174186807282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12946845.post-17340097680025663462009-12-02T16:28:59.058+09:002009-12-02T16:28:59.058+09:00Anonymous:

The dispute is described in that link. It seems like the city is trying to assert its authority in a pretty thoughtless manner, though seeing as the Pearl S. Buck Foundation has been there longer than Bucheon has been a city, it might not be surprising that they'd want to show who's boss. This is the regime of Hong Gun-pyo, who decided to go on a personal vendetta and almost destroy PIFAN, which, as a former resident, I can say is about the only reason to visit.

Another instance of a foreign organization of longstanding would be Daecheon Beach (where the Boryeong Mud Festival takes place). The southern portion of the beach was bought by foreign missionaries in 1946, and essentially seized from them in the 1990s.

Kushibo:
Hopefully the Hines Ward effect in 2006 has more staying power - his visit came about the same time that the government was realizing what effect increasing mixed race marriages would have. Besides, Korea in 1965 is not the same as in 2009, to be sure.

notlearningcantonese:
You rock. First, for those who are cynical, it can suggest that raised awareness about the plight of lower-SES mixed-ethnic Koreans, like what we have seen with Hines Ward, may be short-lived. At least that was the case with Annie Park.

It also highlights part of the source for the deep-seated prejudice toward mixed marriages and mixed-ethnic children. Many people may have looked down on the children of marriages between a Korean woman and a GI, but Annie Park's case gave an air of legitimacy to their fears: even if I don't mind my daughter, sister, cousin, friend marrying a GI (or other non-Korean), look how society will treat her children.kushibohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10306033998028548550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12946845.post-38275224464354048652009-12-02T01:05:43.455+09:002009-12-02T01:05:43.455+09:00"I describes the muckracking" > It de..."I describes the muckracking" > It describes

What's the dispute by the way?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
