I think opinion leaders such as journalists and politicians need to be held accountable for their words and the impact they have on the community.<br /><br />How can we address the state of English education if one partner in that dialog is demonized? <br /><br /><br />I think we can all agree that not everyone who is hired to come to Korea is cut out to be a career teacher. However, that was never a consideration in the recruiting process. <br /><br />Effective on the job training, a secure and positive work environment, and civility will go a long way to improve the product. Likewise, a willingnes to listen to the leaders in the expat community and to discuss how to make sensible changes is necessary.<br /><br />Never once in these articles is there any mention of how hard it might be for a 22-year-old to leave friends and family to work abroad. How many Koreans come home from the states before finishing their university degrees because they miss home?<br /><br />Of course some teachers leave, but the tough questions are never addressed.<br /><br />How many leave because they feel they have no other option?<br /><br />How many are wrongfully dismissed?<br /><br />How many work 18 months and leave half-way through a second contract? -- isn't there a difference?<br /><br />These questions matter.<br /><br />How many Koreans quit their public school job each year?<br /><br />Is it realistic to think that someone would uproot him or herself to work in another country for 4 months intentionally?
